Upgrade XenDesktop 7.5 to 7.6 (PART1): Licensing server & Licenses

In this article I will go in a detailed way to the steps to upgrade XenDesktop 7.5 to 7.6.
I personally like to document procedures in detail, and attempt to include some steps to prevent any installation errors.
I added a code to each step to indicate which steps in the process are necessary to UPGRADE() and which steps are PREPARATION actions (), and which are OPTIONAL VERIFICATION () steps. It's up to you if you want to follow the verification steps.

Current infra (Development)

10x XenDesktop licenses 7.5 -> 7.6
1x License Server 11.11 -> 11.12
2x StoreFront Servers 2.5 -> 2.6
1x PVS Targets with Virtual Delivery Agent 7.5 -> 7.6
2x Provisioning Services Server 7.1 -> 7.1.3
2x Delivery Controllers 7.5-> 7.6
3x SQL 2012SP1 (mirror)

Before you go ahead

Make a full backup of the SQL databases according to procedure
We advise to check that the active databases are running on the Principal SQL Server prior to upgrading the components.
Once the databases are backed up to a secure location, you might optionally shut down the SQL server and make a snapshot of it. (This is mostly recommended for development environments, and non-shared SQL servers.)
Tip: Make sure you don't backup to a server you might use for a revert-to-snapshot later J

Upgrade the License Server 11.11 (11.11.1 build 13012) to 11.12 (11.12.1 build 14008)



Mount the ISO 


Browse to \x64\Licensing


And run CitrixLicensing.exe




Run the AutoSelect.exe installer, which will determine the Citrix Licensing can be upgraded



In this case we will update the components individually.


Click Upgrade  


Upgrade in process...


Select Launch License Administration Console



And Click Finish


Open the administration tab



The License server was upgraded


Go back to the Dashboard tab


Since we are upgrading from an earlier 7.x product version, the date must be at least 2013.0522.


Should there be a problem Reading the licenses, you can find in administration > Vendor daemon Configuration the option Reread License Files.

Upgrade Citrix Licenses to the latest XenDesktop 7.6 version.



Citrix Rollup or feature pack don't exist anymore in XenDesktop 7. Citrix has replaced it by upgrading the product version. This way, customers will need to upgrade their licenses at every update.


It is assumed you have contacted your Citrix reseller, and renewed some licenses with an SA data equal or later than 15 AUG 2014. Only with a date equal or later than this your licenses will work. Furthermore, not upgrading your licenses will generate some errors during our Delivery Controller upgrade readiness check.

All License dates can be found here:

Download the new licenses, and copy them in this folder. Then select Administration > vendor deamon configuration > administer > Reread License files


Check that the date displayed is higher than the SA date.


In the licenses from our lab it shows like this: The first License file grants access to 10 concurrent Xendesktop licenses upto 7.5 (30-09-2015 is older than 15-08-2014 meaning valid for XenDesktop 7.6)
